ORO, PLATA, MATA One should never end with ‘mata’. Oro, Plata, Mata There are guidelines, too, governing the number of steps in one’s stairs. Starting with the first landing, count the steps using the words oro (gold), plata (silver), and mata (death). The perfect last step should be oro. Ending up plata is not too bad either but, understandably, do not ever end up with mata. This ruling is strictly observed especially if it involves the first steps going into the house. If your home has a slight elevation, choose four steps but never three. This building belief is not limited to stairs alone. It also applies to walkways that are made of individual flagstones or the popular circular or square slabs of pebbled concrete or even an entire concrete walkway or ramp that is divided into sections by lines drawn onto the pavement itself, especially if they lead to the main entrance of the house. The Yakans of Mindanao, however, believe in odd numbering of steps. They also require an odd number of bedrooms. Chinese Filipinos, on the other hand, count their steps by fours.         Source

1898 saw the final breath of Imperio Español as it gave up its remaining colonies in Las Antillas Españolas (Latino America) and Indias Orientales Españolas (Oceano Pacifico, inc. Filipinas) to Estados Unidos. Same year, American Imperialism poisoned the Philippines with its two-faced promise of Independence that scarred the newly-born republic. An event that would later lead to the Filipino-American war. Hermanos Filipinos y hermanos hispanos, recordemos siempre. Podemos perdonar pero nunca olvidar. Maligayang araw ng Kasarinlan! :)

We’ve been living in a country where we promote and proclaim freedom. But to many, freedom is just an abstract word that most can’t afford. Freedoom. A society constrained by its traditions and social norms, more often than not, dirty politics.

La Libertad Filipinas Shines a spotlight on this so-called “Liberty” by dissecting aspects of it thru the visual medium. Inspired by propaganda posters of the past, the artists involved are tasked to create a physical representation of what freedom is to them.

Just a thought. In the Philippines, Democracy is abused. Rich families gain control of the ‘free country’. Media abuses the so called ‘Freedom of Speech’. And all that. Makes me think, a Communist Republic is not that bad. Two words. Control and Discipline.
